Newspapers: Daily Mirror - Language and Representations

Blog tasks: Daily Mirror case study

Language

1) Write the definition of the following key language for newspaper front pages (you may want to add an example for each from our Daily Mirror CSP):

Masthead: The title block of the newspaper.

Pug: Something to catch the readers eye.

Splash Head: The lead story.

Slogan: Sums up ethos of newspaper.

Dateline: Date the newspaper was written.

Kicker: Story at top of paper to draw interest in content.

Byline: Gives the name of the journalist/writer.

Standfirst: Introductory paragraph usually in bold.

2) How much does a copy of the Daily Mirror cost? (Note: the current cost is different to the CSP edition - we recommend learning both).

In 2021 it used to cost 80p however it has doubled in price in 2024 as it now costs £1.80

3) What are the main stories on the CSP edition of the Daily Mirror (see above)? Make sure you learn the headline and what the stories are about.

They mainly talk about climate change and how it is heavily impacting our planet and that they must do something about it now.

4) Why is the choice of news stories and content on the Mirror CSP front page typical of a tabloid newspaper?

Since they use images and have 'soft news' on the front of it.

5) What is the balance on the Daily Mirror front page between images, headlines and text?

The top half is soft news featuring sport news and Pride of Britain meanwhile the bottom half features a helpless man in a wildfire referring to climate change once again.

Representations

1) What political party does the Daily Mirror support? Is there any evidence to support this in the CSP pages we have studied?

They support the Labour party because they are a voice for the normal people against the 'Elite' people that follow the conservative party.

2) How does the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards represent ordinary British people?

They represent extraordinary people of all ages, from children of courage to lifesaving emergency workers.

3) How is climate change as an issue represented in the Daily Mirror? What evidence can you provide from the CSP pages to support this?

It is presented as an issue since the splash head is in big lettering saying "HEAT IS ON" with a man in distress in a forest wildfire trying to "reach" out for help to the audience.

4) How are environmental protesters like Greta Thunberg represented in the Daily Mirror? Look at the inside pages to answer this.

Greta is represented as a hero for the younger and future generations because she is a young female going up against world leaders which subverts the stereotype of women not speaking up enough in politics and governmental issues. She also reinforces the stereotype of the Daily Mirror newspaper being towards women.

5) How are different countries and political leaders represented in the Daily Mirror? Does this reinforce or subvert the stereotypes we usually see in the media?

It reinforces the stereotypes but also subverts them because the way the reinforce them is by them all forming/gathering together in a line to discuss with each other about the current state of the planet right now and the way they subvert it is by putting a woman in the middle to make her stand out and look like she is the most engaging one out of them all and Boris Johnson is all the way to the side making him look like he is not involved with them.
